Warhammer's expansion for Battle March has just been released in the UK. Given the rise of the Games Workshop franchises through digital media AND the fact that they have Age of Reckoning just around the corner, you've got to applaud their bravery. Although perhaps one might think this is just going to whip us poor geeks into a buying frenzy. They're not far wrong, if my mates are anything to go by.
I've only logged 10 hours play time on this beast and I'm already impressed. They've successfully kept the highly cerebral aspect of the game, and just added content and value to it, across the board.
The two new bad guy races (Orc's N' Gobs, And Dark eldar) Are really well done. The new characters are fluid, faithful to the table top for the die hard fans and most importantly fun to play.
Orcs are of course a riot, and you cannot go far wrong with the -point and run- tactic that most orc players advocate. Dark eldar are very specialised as of course you'd expect, but the powers of the relative units are fairly well balanced so far.
As well they've sorted out making the story's a little more involved. I suspect some customer group somewhere said they really liked the path choosing in Mark of Chaos (Im a nurlgite for those who care. My poncy mate chose Khorne.) And somehow theyve let you believe youre path choosing, even when youre not. Theres much to be done including off the path idol guarding, while youre waiting for moar boyz to show up.
They have also maintained the standard format of the single player campaign; journey through various battles/encounters, towards a fortress finale where either, you hold the castle, or you knock the hell out of the enemies'.
Graphically it maintains the high standard of its predecessor, allowing you to zoom right in to see your units stamp out the enemy as viscerally as you like. Conversely of course you can zoom out and watch the spectacular effect of your heroes powers on enemy forces, scattering them like wheat before your virtual scythe.
And I'm saying all this as just a single player so far. I've not even tried this online as yet, Where they've created a whole new game mode: World domination. Essentially RISK, having to play the battles manually.
